Another Trip to London!

After going to London, I was able to take some photographs of the beautiful architecture as well as visiting some galleries.

JEAN DUBUFFET ‘THE BUSY LIFE’

In this piece Jean has mainly painted with resembled layers of butter which he then scratches into to make these graffiti type figures. I think the way these figures have been drawn  give the piece a child-like aspect though I can imagine it would be quiet difficult to achieve the simplistic mind of a child as an adult. The use of thick paint applied with a large spatula with layers of colours underneath seem like a fun processes to manipulate and easily altered.

MIYAKO ISHIUCHI ‘TRANSFORMED VISIONS’

Miyako has created a series of photographs which were inspired by her concerns with capturing social conditions in a country haunted by the memories of the second world war. Her work offers radical vision of post-hiroshima Japan, focusing on the alienation and disaffection characterizing urban life.  In these photographs it reflects her struggle between the past and present with the uncertainty of the future identity of Japan.

MAX ERNST ‘THE ENTIRE CITY’ 1934

Ernst had created an entire series of similar paintings to this one though I recognized this painting from a previous visit to Tate Modern. By using scraps of paper onto canvas and painting over the top, it gives the impression that this is a crumbling city which looms oppressively below a ring-shaped moon. I enjoyed viewing this piece of artwork again as I was able to appreciate it more looking into the theme around the city.
